Capella University Announces 13 New Educational Offerings

The online university has added a PsyD in School Psychology, a PhD in Business Management, an MS in Higher Education, and 10 graduate-level specializations

MINNEAPOLIS, January 24, 2012 – Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults, has announced 13 new educational offerings. They include a PsyD in School Psychology, and an MS in Higher Education with three specializations in Adult Education, Enrollment Management, and Higher Education Leadership and Administration. Capella has also launched a PhD in Business Management with five specializations in Finance, General Business Management, Human Resource Management, Leadership, and Marketing; and expanded its Doctor of Business Administration program, adding two new specializations, in Human Resource Management, and Leadership.

PsyD in School Psychology is first such program available online
Capella’s new degree program is designed to provide licensed school psychologists with the opportunity to further their education without putting their careers on hold and help fulfill the current need for doctoral-educated school psychologists. Modeled on national standards for school psychology, Capella’s PsyD in School Psychology includes online course work, graduate teaching opportunities, and field experiences. The first and only PsyD in School Psychology offered online, the program covers such areas as consultation, supervision, evaluation, research and planning, ethics, and intervention and prevention strategies. Capella’s instructors are all doctoral-level, licensed school psychologists with years of frontline experience, providing students with real-world insight and valuable mentoring. The new program expands the university’s offerings in the field of school psychology, which also includes an MS in Psychology, School Psychology specialization, and a post-master’s Specialist Certificate in School Psychology.

Capella’s new doctoral business offerings help address the global shortage of qualified business faculty
“There’s a shortage of doctoral-qualified faculty in nearly every business discipline due to the growth in undergraduate and MBA business programs and the escalating number of Baby Boomer retirements,” said William Reed, PhD, dean of Capella’s School of Business and Technology. “To help meet that demand, we have launched our new PhD in Business Management with five in-demand specializations: Finance, General Business Management, Human Resource Management, Leadership, and Marketing. We are also adding two specializations to our DBA program, Human Resource Management, and Leadership, to offer additional subject matter choices to those more focused on corporate leadership or consulting roles, but who may also want to teach. Whether the goal is to teach, research, lead, or consult, we provide a range of business doctoral choices to help our adult students achieve their professional goals and address today’s business needs.”

New online master’s degree focuses on higher education topics
Capella created a new Master of Science in Higher Education to address the specific issues faced by faculty and administrators in higher education, including cultural and academic diversity; strategies for teaching, assessing and measuring higher education and adult students; the use of technology to improve learning; and the development of business skills needed to lead and manage change in higher education institutions.

The three MS in Higher Education specializations include Enrollment Management, which is the only online program that also includes professional certification from Noel-Levitz, a nationally recognized consulting firm specializing in higher education recruitment and retention. Capella also offers a specialization in Higher Education Leadership and Administration, which includes a choice of emphases in either Community College Leadership or Higher Education Program Administration. The third master’s specialization, Adult Education, covers such topics as collaborative learning, program development for adult students, and diverse learning styles.

As of September 30, 2011, more than 35,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella University (http://www.capella.edu), with nearly 80 percent enrolled in Capella’s doctoral degree programs and master’s degree programs.

Previously, Kinney was president of West Education Group at Thomson Reuters Corporation. Capella University brings us Geoffrey Canada

Image

Just when I thought that I had mentioned all that I could have ever imagined about the wonderment that surrounds the community and the intellectual “hugs” that are associated with being a Capella University learner, my alma mater has accomplished another fantastic feat. On December 28, 2011, the prestigious and world-renowned Geoffrey Canada will be presenting during a Live Stream on a topic entitled, “Leading the Way”. The anticipation that I have about this entire discussion can barely be put into words.

There are probably very few educators at this point who have not at least heard of the movie “Waiting for Superman”. Teachers in all types of schools across the globe had to at least take interest in re-evaluating the state of education once the movie was released. Others probably had discussion groups soon after. However, Mr. Canada is more than a star in a movie. To many educators, he is a trailblazer. My plan is to be prompt in my arrival (online) and to be diligent in hearing the current message that is so timely before the start of the new year. I know I will go back to the classroom inspired. This one meeting is a testament to the power of online learning, especially when future Capella learners, current learners, staff, and alumni have such an excellent school like Capella University leading the way.

His bold ideas and transformational work have garnered national attention. He’s been:

With the U.S. getting only average marks for its public education, many would argue that we’re simply not doing enough to support our children—and our future.
